The SportPesa sponsored annual Kothbiro football tournament quarter-finals kicked off smoothly with two matches on the card. In the afternoon, Kingstone the only team to have reached this stage from last season dismissed their neighbours Shauri Moyo Sportive 2 – 1 in a derby that was not to be missed.
Kingstone took charge of the proceedings from early on and showed some teeth in the 7’ as John Walubaka connected wonderfully with a beautiful cross from Clifford Omondi and his tap- in squeezed in-between the keepers legs and nestled at the back of the net.
Kingstone boosted by the goal pressed on forward and Eugene Oduor’s 20’ attempt from a very tight angle went straight to Sportive’s keeper. Man of the match John Walubaka was on the prowl again as he curled a beautiful shot in the 41’ which just went a bit over the bar.
The 2nd half kicked off more tensely as hundreds of fans had settled in the ground but this did not deter Kingstone as Walubaka was at it again this time dribbling easily like an eel in a vat of grease past three Sportive’s defenders but his final shot was too weak to threaten the keeper.
In the 65’ Eugene Oduor made a wonderful solo run and cut through the left flank and went for goal himself without fail.
Sportive as probably part of their strategy left it till late to mount a formidable attack as Lunzi lobbied in a straight cross in the 85’ which Freedy Eninga made no mistake by hitting it hard to the back of the net and in contention of the top scorer’s golden boot award.
Buoyed by that thunder shot, Sportive pushed forward and in the 88’, Maxi Matano made a good cut past Kingstone’s defenders but failed to connect a good shot and squanders the ball.
Sportive’s star scorer Freedy Eninga was on the prowl again but his run for goal was cut short as he was fouled in the box in the 90’. Evans Anguyo stepped up to take the resultant penalty but his shot was blocked. 2-1 it ended in favour of Kingstone who will play against Githurai United in the first semi-final on Saturday 29, at 3pm.

Earlier on Githurai United beat Cheza Ukipenda fc in post-match penalties to keep their hopes of the title alive and also a position in the lucrative last four.
Cheza Ukipenda were the first on the score sheet in the 58” through a strong and powerful header by Alex Libesi. The match was exciting and evenly balanced but Githurai were very strong on the left flank as Georgia based and former Gor Mahia player Amos Nondi made defense unsettling passes that were always completed.
Githurai pressure paid off as in the 90’ Raymond Fikirini was fouled strongly in the box. Amos Nondi took the high wire risk and converted the penalty. The match ended a minute later and the post-match penalties went in favor of Githurai as only one shot was blocked from all the shots.

The semi-finals are slated for Saturday 29, and Sunday 30.
